Chapter 9
~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few weeks later
DecemberDavid Duchovny walked down the steps of his home and unlocked the doors to his car. He was going back to the set to see Gillian again. Ever since he had come to her and told her about what he was going through in his marriage, he had been going to her to escape Tèa. It was good to get away from her arguments and her constant talk about how he was always gone. She had landed him a movie deal, and that did keep him occupied, but he still managed to see Gillian at least one a week.
"David? Where are you going?" he heard a voice suddenly and cringed, turning around and seeing his wife on the front porch, her hands on her hips.
"Oh, I'm going out to meet with Gary and see this script he's been working on," he lied.
"I see. Didn't you see him last week about it?" she asked, walking off the porch and looking at David with an intense look.
He gulped and cursed himself. He was running out of excuses. "Well, yeah. But he needs some help with you. You know how difficult it was for me to write the scripts for my episodes, so I'm just going-"
"David, you need to cut this out! For the past few weeks, you've been going everywhere! I know you're working on your new movie, but even on the days off you're always going somewhere and you and I haven't spent a day alone together..."
"I know, and I'm sorry-"
"Well, how about I go with you?" she asked, titling her head, determined to win this little battle with him.
"No no, that's okay," he insisted. "You need to stay and watch West."
"Always get the nanny to."
David was running out of excuses and options on what to do. "Listen, how about I take you to dinner tonight?" he asked in a hopeful voice. Tèa thought about it for a moment before a small smile spread across her face. "You really mean that you and I can have a really nice dinner with no interruptions?"
"Sure," he smiled back in retun, secretly hoping she would take the bait and he could go to the set before he missed Gillian.
"Okay then, tonight we'll go to our favorite restaurant...and tonight...it's just you and I..."
"Exactly," he said and kissed her cheek. "I'll see you in a few."
Tèa watched her husband get into the car and pull out of the driveway. She knew that something was definitely wrong with him going away on his days off, but in time all that would come to a stop. She put a hand to her stomach and her smile turned into a wicked grin as she stepped inside the house, knowing her news tonight would rock his world in more ways than one.
The X-Files Set
Soundstage 5
20th Century Fox"Okay everyone, thanks for coming today and filming the episode a little earlier than we had originally planned," Chris Carter said to his cast who were all standing in Scully's apartment. "Glad to say that the episode 'TrustNO1' is now finished!" Loud cheers were heard around. They had finally finished one the most emotional episodes thus far. Chris turned to Gillian who was looking around the set. "Everyone, you're free to go. Gill, stay a second, okay?"
Gillian turned and nodded with a slight smile. Things on the set were going better than they had going over the past few months. Ever since the day that David came back and told her that he would try and come at least once a week, she found it easier to get through the week. The pain knowing that she wasn't able to see him every day was still there, but it was a hell of a lot better than not seeing him at all. She walked over to Chris once the crowd faded out and gave him a look of curiosity. "What is it Chris?" she asked.
Chris looked at her with a small smile put his hand on her back. "Let's take a walk, shall we?" he asked, leading her away from the cast and crew members. Her heart began to pound in her chest as they slowly walked on the set. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing really, I was just wanting to congratulate you on a job well done on this episode, I really admire the fact that you went back into you...shall I say, Scully mode?"
Gillian blushed a little and looked down at the floor. "Thanks, I guess."
"I was just wondering, how are things?"
"I guess they're okay, a little hectic, but that's usual."
Chris looked at her. "I was watching some reason interviews that's been airing lately, you know with Robert, Annabeth and of course you, and I noticed something in all of those."
She looked up. "What's that?"
"You mention how much you miss David."
"Chris..." she sighed and stopped, turning to him. "I really don't feel like-"
"Listen, I'm not lecturing you or anything, but Gillian, if you continue to talk like that, people are going to start to wonder."
"Wonder?"
"Well, if there is anything going on between you and him," he said cautiously.
"Listen Chris, I appreciate your concern for me, but I'm fine. And there is nothing going with me and David," she said, looking at him. "Now please, just...drop this subject. Let me go on in peace, please."
Chris frowned and nodded his head. "Just making an observation."
Gillian nodded her head and started to walk away. "Just leave it alone, please," she called out.
Chris Carter stood and watched her walk away from him and scratched his head. He knew Gillian more than most and something told him that something was wrong and it had to involve David. He decided to leave it alone for the time being and headed off to start his vacation.
Walking to her trailed, Gillian began to think about what Chris had talked to her about. She had been mentioning lately that she missed David terribly and almost cried when she was asked about it for the 3rd time that one day. She did miss him, she missed his presence, his humor, seeing his beautiful hazel eyes, the smell of his cologne, everything about him. She was seeing almost every week for about an hour, but she couldn't get enough of it. 'I just wish that he would leave Tèa and come back to me,' she thought as she came to her door and noticed it was slightly open. David was here. Smiling, she walked inside and saw him sitting on her couch with a bright smile.
"Hey," she greeted him, closing the door and walking over, giving him a brief hug. He hugged her back in return and planted a soft kiss to her cheek. "Hey back at you," he answered. "Sorry I'm a little late, couldn't get away from the wife."
She nodded her head, understanding. David was having trouble getting away from Tèa for the past few weeks, and she knew that they had to be careful about his visits. Like Chris had said, they didn't want to make the impression that something was going on between the two.
Not that there was, but she wished there was.
"It's okay, how are you?"
"About the same," he replied, sitting down on the couch and watched as Gillian sat next to him closely. "What about you?"
"I'm okay, exhausted from filming an episode. Hey, I think Chris is onto me," she said.
"What do you mean?"
"He stopped me today and told me he was glad that I was doing better on the set and brought up how I was talking about missing you during interviews. He thinks something's up with you and me."
David shifted on the couch, "Well, what did you say?"
"I told him to drop the subject."
"Is it obvious that you and I are seeing one another?"
"No, I don't think so. What about Tèa?"
"I think she thinks I'm doing something other than seeing Gary about his script. She's making me taking her to dinner tonight for some...personal time," he sighed. He felt Gillian stiffen against him. "I'm sorry, Gillian."
"It's okay," she said, placing her head on his shoulder and folding her arms. "You can't help that you have to still be a husband to her."
"Gill, you know I would leave her, but-"
"I know," she whispered. "I just wish things were different."
David closed his eyes, breathing in the sweet smell of Gillian's perfume as she nuzzled into his shoulder. He missed being close to her, missed being able to see her, smell her perfume and her shampoo, hear her laugh, and being with her. 'Damn fate', he thought bitterly.
"So do I," he said softly, putting his arm around her and bringing her closer. "So do I."
"Christmas is coming," she said.
"I know."
"You remember how after my divorce you and I took off together?"
He smiled. "Yes, yes I remember."
"I wish we could do that again."
"Hmmmm....me too, but you know we can't," he told her gently.
"I know."
They sat there in silence for a few brief moments.
"David?"
"Yes, Gillian?"
"I wish things were like how they used to be," she whispered sadly.
"So do I," he answered, kissing her temple. "So do I."
Later that night...
"David, it's like when we first met!" Tèa exclaimed with a bright smile on her face. David nodded his head and the two walked over to their reserved table at the restaurant they had dinner at when they first got together. He was dreading this, but he had to do if he wanted things between them to stay intact for West. In a way, he felt that he was doing the right thing by taking his wife to dinner, after all, they were married, maybe not happily married, but they were nonetheless married, and this was what most couples did. And he was doing this so their marriage could last so they wouldn't mess up the life they gave West.
But there was Gillian, and just the thought that she should be the one he should be taking to dinner killed him, breaking his heart into millions of pieces.
"Ooh...David, this is the same table we ate at, remember?" Tèa voice broke in as she took her coat off and handed it to the waiter, a bright smile on her face. David took his coat off and then sat down in the chair, suddenly remember the dinner they shared almost 5 years ago. 'Oh God, has it been that long?' he thought. Their 5 year wedding anniversary was going to be here in 6 months.
"Yeah, I remember," he replied, smiling slightly as she sat down. "Hard to believe it's been almost 5 years since we been married."
"Ahhh... I know," she sighed and put her head on her chin, looking at him. "And it's been one amazing 5 years too."
'Maybe for you, but for me, that's a different story.'
A waiter came up to the table and asked what they wanted to drink. David's eyes nearly popped out of his head when she ordered the most expensive champagne on the menu.
"Honey, is tonight a special special occasion?" he asked, chuckling.
"Well, this is our dinner without any interruptions, isn't it?" she asked, raising her eyebrows, "and it's a night where you and I can be alone, lover man..." Tèa took her finger and traced his lips. David closed his eyes, his stomach in knots.
When the waiter returned with the bottle of champagne, David noticed that Tèa was smiling about something, like she was holding a secret of some kind. He wondered what it could be. She poured them two glasses of champagne. "I saw we propose a toast, to almost 5 years of being together, and sticking with one another through thick and thin," she suggested, a small smile on her lips as she raised her glass. David nodded his head and raised his. "To us," she said, clinking his glass. "To us," he echoed and took a drink.
After she had finished. Tèa sat her glass down on the table and looked at David intensely. She took a deep breath. "David, there's something else that's special about tonight."
'Oh, here it comes.' "What would that be, honey?" he asked, taking a drink from his glass and looking at her with curiosity.
"Well, I..I know that you and I have been having it rough for the past few months and honey... well...I don't know how this happened, but I'm..really happy for us, and I guess I can say this is sort of a holiday present for us all," she said grabbing his hand.
"What is it?" he urged her.
"David...I'm..." Tèa said with a small laugh, "David, I'm pregnant."
David Duchovny felt time, the world, and his heart stop at her three little words.
3 days later
"And here at 'Entertainment Tonight', we would like to wish our congratulations to David Duchovny and Tèa Leoni who are having their second child together. What a great Christmas present to the happy couple!"
Gillian Anderson stood in the middle of her living room, in complete, utter shock in front of her television set. Her body went numb, her eyes filled with unshed tears, and her heart broke in pieces.
Some Christmas present...
