Chapter 7
~~~~~~~~~~
2 weeks later
Gillian Anderson took note that she was pushing people down as she ran down the halls to Chris Carter's office. At the moment, she could care little. In her hand she held the script that would change everything on the show and for future projects. He had to be mad, this was a sick joke he was playing on her, she decided as she caught her breath. She knocked on the door furiously, shouting his name as Gillian continued to beat. She finally heard a faint voice call out from the other side of the door and stormed into the office, slamming the door.
"Explain this," Gillian said hotly, as she slapped the script on Chris Carter's desk. He looked up from the document he had been reading and raised his eyebrows. "Something wrong Gillian?"
"Something wrong? Something wrong?! Chris, you're writing out Mulder!"
"Yes. Yes, I am," he replied calmly, coolly.
Gillian put her hands on her hips. "Why?! I thought we had come to the conclusion that the one thing we could not do was to write out Mulder?"
"We did."
"So, what the hell is going on here?"
Chris sighed, and rubbed his eyes. "Gilly, you know David doesn't want to come back to work. He called me a few days ago saying that the deal with the movie was off. He's moving on to other projects and-"
"He what?!" she exploded and threw her arms in the air. "What do you mean...he's not doing the movie? Why!? I don't understand..."
"Like I said, other movie projects. Some movie with Julia Roberts came up or something and come on, you knew back when he left that we all had the feeling he wouldn't go through with it. He's done with us Gillian, he wants nothing of the X-Files or us anymore."
"I don't believe that." She fought back a despair that went deeper than tears. She took a deep breath and bit her lip. David doing the second X-Files movie had been her only hope to see him and not have anything said about it. Why would he do this?
Chris saw how upset Gillian was getting over this and leaned forward. "Gillian, I know you don't want this, I'm killing off a main character that held the show for eight years. I don't want it. I would love to see David back on the set anyway, but it won't happen and it's like I was telling Vince and Frank, this way we could have a new beginning. A new beginning with Scully and maybe have Doggett in that-"
"No! No, that wouldn't be right Chris! You..you just can't kill off Mulder, the man that Scully loves so dearly, that has changed her inside and out and expect her to be okay and move on. Chris she won't accept his death...you...you can't kill him off. Think of what it'll do to the series and if we do a movie without David. Think of the fans..."
"I know Gillian, I've been thinking about this greatly. The fans will simplify get over it. With my new plans we-"
"The plans, the plans, the plans! I'm sick of this Chris! This ring-a-round-a-rosy! You say we're going to have a great season, but it's always a disappointment! It's not doing any good at all!"
Chris frowned tightly and looked straight at her. "This is about you and David, isn't it? You're so torn up about this because now you won't be able to see him...this just ruins it, don't it?"
"Chris-"
"No, I'm right, aren't I? Gillian, you have to accept that David is married and loves Tèa-"
"No! I..I can't handle this..." she held back a cry and ran from Chris's office in a hurry. She reached her trailer, slammed the door and leaned against the cool metal, holding back her tears. Why was this happening? Had David really decided not come back to make a movie? She had to know what was going on.
Clearing her throat and gaining her composure, she grabbed her cell phone and dialed his number, begging silently that he was home and Tèa wouldn't pick up the phone.
~~~~~~~
David Duchovny rolled over onto his side and bumped into a body beside him. He slowly opened his eyes and noticed his wife sleeping soundly beside him, wrapped in bed sheets, her hair sprung across the pillow and a content look on her face. David rubbed his eyes and sighed softly. Last night had been one wild night alright. He took mental note that seeing "Eyes Wide Shut" again for the fourth time, would give her ideas.
He laid there in the bed deep in thought. It had been a few months since the last time they had fought with one another. In a way, it was good that they were getting along, for Maddy's sake. But in many ways, it was horrible. David hadn't be able to keep in touch with some of the cast back on the set, like he promised he would. And he hadn't been able to see Gillian or hear from her and even see her. That was what was killing him. He didn't know if she was doing fine or was doing worse than the last he saw her.
He turned again on his back and stared at patterns painted on the bedroom ceiling. He glanced over and looked at the telephone and sighed. He wished he could call her and maybe grab another cup of coffee at Starbucks, but Tèa wouldn't allow it. He closed his eyes at the memory of her telling him if they were stay together in this marriage, he couldn't see Gillian again. 'Damn her', he thought bitterly.
It was at that moment that the phone rang, causing him to nearly jump out of bed. He groaned loudly, wondering who could be calling him. All of his friends were out of town that he knew of. He reached over and brought it to his ear.
"Hello?" he asked curtly.
"David?"
His heart stopped beating at the familiar voice that came across the phone. 'Fate can be so sick sometimes,' he thought.
"Gillian?"
"Uh...hi...yeah, it's me," she answered back slowly. She seemed to be surprised as much as he was by this phone call.
"Is, um everything okay?" he turned around slowly on his side, so he wouldn't disturb hissleeping wife beside of him.
"David um..." Gillian sounded upset as she took a pause between her words. Her voice seemed to crackle every time she spoke. "Chris told me you weren't doing the movie?"
'Oh damn,' he thought. He had almost forgotten about that. Tèa earlier in the week had a discussion with him about the movie and basically decided that he shouldn't do it, that possibly a movie offer would come in soon. 'That's why she's calling.'
"Listen Gilly I-"
"Why aren't you doing it David?" she asked, her tone of voice harsher than what it had been before.
"David, who's on the phone?" he heard his wife asked sleepily. He froze up and gasped softly. He had to think fast. "Look, I don't know what you're trying to say but I'm not doing the movie and that's that!" he slammed the phone down and laid back into the bed, his heart breaking at what he just did to Gillian.
"Who was it?" Tèa asked, turning over to face her husband.
"Chris Carter, wanted to know if I would do the movie or not," David lied and sighed, thinking back to Gillian.
~~~~~~
Gillian Anderson's world came crashing down at the sound of the dial tone on her cell phone. She let her cell phone fall from her hand absently as she slid down the wall and into a heap on the floor, sobbing. David had did it again to her, shattered her world. 'What have I done wrong?' she asked herself asked herself as she cried. 'What have I done to deserve this?' His words echoed in her mind and they took a stab at her heart.
~~~~~~~~~Chapter 8
~~~~~~~~~~
"Okay, David honey, I'm taking Maddy with me to the mall and I should be back around 6 with dinner, is that okay with you?" Tèa Leoni rushed down the stairs and picked up her little girl from her play pin. David walked into the living room with her car keys. "Yeah, here's the keys and having dinner late sounds fine too." Thankfully, she was going out for the day and taking Maddy with her. All morning, David regretted what he had done to Gillian over the phone and he knew because of that he had hurt her. He was going to the set today to fix things.
If he could get Tèa to just leave already.
"Well, alright, seems like you want me to leave, why?" she asked, raising her eyebrows and flashing a playful smile. He gave her a small smile in return. "I umm...I have a surprise waiting for you when you get home tonight and I need you to leave so I can get it ready," he said quickly and then congratulated himself silently for being a great liar to his wife.
"Oooh, I see," she purred and then kissed David on the lips. "Will I like my surprise?" she asked in a sultry voice.
"I hope so," David grinned and then winked. 'Those acting skills are coming in handy.'
"Well, maybe I won't be out too long then lover man," she said, taking her finger and sliding it down his shirt and pursed her lips.
"Uhh...no, that's okay. You and West have a good mother and daughter day out," David said, hoping she would be out for a long time. Tèa nodded and then grabbed her purse. "Okay then," she answered, "hope you have fun with your surprise and I'll see you soon. Say bye to daddy! Bye sweetie!"
David let out a relieved sigh and then hurried to put his shoes on. He glanced at the clock and saw it was almost lunchtime for the set. He knew exactly where Gillian would be at lunch. There, they could talk and he could straighten everything out.
Running out the door, he got into his car and drove to 20th Century Fox Studios.
~~~~~~~~
"Meredith! I need you to do a favor!" a man called out as Meredith walked over to him tiredly. Today had been a hell of a day, she had been working at both The X-Files sets and various little sets where they were filming commercials. Her feet hurt from the walking and she wished she could had more sleep.
"What is it boss?"
"Miss Gillian Anderson ordered a salad for lunch, need ya to take it to her trailer, not up for a day out to eat I suppose."
Meredith sighed and took the plastic container from his hands. "Fine fine, I'll return," she muttered and began to walk into the direction of her trailer. Luckily for her, the trailer wasn't a long distance. This wouldn't take long at all.
As she was walking and in the mists of her thoughts, she bumped into a man by accident. They both grunted in response and looked at each other for a moment. "Sorry sir," she apologized.
"My fault," the man answered. He looked at the girl strangely for a moment. Meredith thought she recognized his face and the deadpan of his tone of voice. And then it hit her.
"What are you doin' here Mr. Duchovny?" she asked almost accusingly.
"What am *I* doing here?" he questioned. "I have a right to be here," he said in an angry tone.
"Look, you're the dude that left the show or whatever and I thought you'd never come back, that is all," Meredith answered and started for Gillian's trailer, muttering to herself. She noticed that David was following her.
"Where are you going with the salad?" he asked. Meredith raised her eyebrows. "Look, sorry for bumping into you, but I'm not going to give you Miss Gillian Anderson's salad-"
"You're taking this to Gillian?" he asked, pointing to the salad she held in her hands. Meredith sighed loudly and stopped, looking at him with a frustrated look on her face. "Yes, I am, and what's it to you?"
"I'm going to go see her, you want me to take it to her?" David offered. Meredith laughed and started to walk again. "Whatever Mr. Duchovny, I have to take this to her."
"Look, kid, I'm not going to argue with you, I'd like to take this to her," David sighed, obviously getting aggravated with this difficult child. He saw the smile on her facial expression change.
"You're the guy she talks about," Meredith said with an evil grin, causing David's face to fall as he looked at her. "I...I am?" he asked, his tone softer than before.
"Yeah, she talks about ya."
"What does she say?"
"Well, I don't know if I should say anything or not..." Meredith teased as she walked on, not looking back at David.
"C'mon, you got to tell me," he nearly begged. "What does she say about me?"
"What's it to you?"
"I'm just curious, I'll pay you if you tell me what she's said".
Meredith stopped in her tracks and seriously considered the offer. She shook her head about pondering for a moment and kept on walking. She heard him swore and heard him walking after her.
"What's your name?" he sighed.
"Meredith."
"Meredith...okay. Can you please tell me what she's said? It would mean a lot to me," David tried to reason her. The thought of knowing that this kid who didn't look more than 15 years old knew something that he didn't was killing him. He had to know what Gillian said.
"Fine fine you big baby, don't have to beg," she turned on her and faced him. "I know she misses you. A lot. And I mean a lot. But that's it, she just misses you and wish you would come back to the show. Satisfied?" She pushed the plastic container in his arms and started to walk off. "And you can take that to her too!" she called out and walked off with a mischievous grin on her face.
David Duchovny stood there holding the container of salad in his hands and in shock. Gillian missed him. And apparently everyone knew it because this little girl knew about it. He smiled slightly and then turned to walk to her trailer, hoping that she was there when he arrived.
~~~~~~~~
Gillian Anderson had fallen into an uneasy sleep on the couch in her trailer. She had not been called out for filming, thank God and she had ordered a salad for lunch. If she didn't answer the door, they would just leave it there and she would get it later. She woke up with a jump and then groaned. David was haunting her dreams. She couldn't help but think of him even though what he did this morning was still on her mind and hurt her.
She was broken up by her thoughts by the gentle knocking on her door which surprised her. Her assistant or Meredith would bang on the door with their fists. 'Must be someone new to the set,' she thought as she looked at herself in the mirror and cursed because her eyes were red and puffy. 'Well, it'll do,' she thought and slowly took a deep breath and opened the door.
Her mouth nearly dropped to the ground when she saw David Duchovny at her trailer door.
"David? What the hell are you doing here?!" she asked angrily, seeing his expression change. He looked down at the ground and then back to hers. "Listen, can we talk?" he asked in a hopeful voice. Gillian stood there and stared at him coldly, noticing the salad he held in his hands. "What are you doing here?" she repeated herself.
"I came to apologize for this morning," he answered, taking a step closer. Gillian took a step back away from him and sighed, opening the door all the way and letting him come into her trailer.
The trailer he noticed had changed slightly since the last he was in here. It was tidier now, things were straighten and a fresh scent of a candle filled the air. Aromatherapy. He noticed the set of blue candles lit on her table. Blue was for relaxing, a way to soothe yourself. 'Probably lit them because of me,' he thought as he set the salad in the fridge and noticed the how it was full of bottled water, like it used to be.
He looked and saw her sitting down on the couch, wrapping her blanket around her, shivering. David sighed and then slowly sat down beside her, but she didn't acknowledge him sitting next to her. 'She numb, cold, angry,' he thought and pursed his lips. "Gillian, I'm sorry about this morning," he finally said.
"Why the hell did you do that?" she asked coldly, not looking at him. "Why?"
"Gillian, Tèa has basically had me under house arrest since-"
"Ooh, so that's it? Tèa?" she turned her head around. "So, you mean to say that after that whatever you want to call it at Starbucks that you went back to your wife?" she snapped. David turned around and looked at her.
"No! I mean, yes, I had to tell her what happened but...damnit Gillian listen to me!" he shouted angrily as she turned away from him. David took her hand, causing her to look back at him.
"Let go of my hand," she muttered, glaring at him.
"Gillian, I need you to listen to me, alright? Just..please, let me explain." She jerked her hand back from him and bit her lip, keeping herself from crying. "What you did this morning has no excuse!" she yelled. "You know what that did to me David? Huh? You literally broke my heart into a million pieces and crashed my world...I wanted to talk to you about why you weren't going to do the movie and then you that..you said I could call you at anytime but I guess not, right?" She was crying now, the tears flowing down her face freely. David sat there and look at her in disbelief at this.
"Gilly, I am..I am so so sorry...I shouldn't had done it, but if she found out I was talking to you, then she would murder me. I've promised her I wouldn't see you because we had an argument the day that we ran into each other. I had...I had to do because I needed to do it for my little girl. Please...please understand." David looked down and ran a hand thought his hair.
She sat there and brought a hand to her mouth. She couldn't believe that had happened to him. 'She is nothing but a bitch," Gillian thought as she composed herself and lifted David's head.
"I'm sorry," she whispered and looked way, pulling the blanket around her. "I shouldn't had done that to you."
"It's okay, I deserved it," David said as he sighed. "I'm not doing the movie because of her too."
Gillian turned her head and gasped. "It sounds like she's controlling you!"
"In a way, she is. She wants to make sure we stay a family for Maddy, it's why I'm still with her."
"You mean to tell me you would leave her if you didn't have Maddy?" 'What is he thinking?'
David nodded his head. "Yeah, that's what I'm saying."
"What are you talking about David?"
"Gillian, my life's been hell," he admitted softly. He normally didn't like to talk about his marriage to anyone, it wasn't like him to. But he needed to tell Gillian this and get it off his chest. He needed to or it would kill him.
She looked down at his hands and noticed the missing wedding ring. He had been off his finger the day they bumped into each other at Starbucks too.
"What's been going on?" she curled into the blanket and looked at him as he talked.
"Tèa has always been under the impression that I've been cheating on her and for the past few months ever since we ran into each other, she's put me on a short leash and doesn't want to file for separation because of Maddy and I don't either. Ever since I made the agreement, it seems like she's happier...and...well, last night..."
"Spare me the details David, I know what you're saying," Gillian sighed and then laid her head down on the top of couch. "And I understand why now."
"So when you called, I..I really couldn't risk it...but now..." he took a deep breath. "I don't know if I can take it much longer." He looked at her. "I've been wanting to talk to you..."
"You...you have?"
"Yes, I have and I've been too much of a damn chicken to do anything about it."
"David, you're doing what's best for your little girl and I understand that." Gillian took his hand and squeezed it. "I'm sorry for the way I acted."
He looked down at their hands and a small smile played at his lips. He looked into her face.
"Thank you, Gillian." He leaned over and embraced her, feeling her warmth against his chest and smelling the sweet scent of her perfume on her neck as he buried his face. He felt her draw him closer to her as the two held one another in a silent embrace, feeling safe in each other's arms.
Gillian closed her eyes as she breathed in David's unforgettable scent. God, she was so happy to have him here with her. When she was around him, she felt whole, and more like herself. She was always happy and a had sense of security. She heard David sigh softly. 'God, we've both been living our lives in hell, haven't we?'
David pulled back from her and studied her face. "Thank you for listening to me," he murmured softly. Gillian smiled weakly. "No problem." He smiled at her and brought his hands to her face, feeling the smoothness of her cheeks. Memories flooded his mind of moments like this and how much he missed them. He couldn't do it...he shouldn't do it...
He found his hands were cupping her face now, and reaching for her as she placed her hands at his face and reached for him as well. They both, after months of not seeing one another, wanted this and needed this.
David's lips brushed against Gillian's softly at first, and felt her return his kiss gently. They kissed each other in a careful like way, like they had when they first kissed years ago. She opened her mouth to him and he pushed his tongue into her mouth. He heard a soft moan from her as he slowly savored the taste and sensation of their kiss and felt her hands go into his hair.
The lack of oxygen caused them to pull apart from one another breathlessly as David leaned his head gently against her temple, his eyes closed. Gillian had hers closed as well, remembering their breathtaking kiss. "Oh God..." she whispered. "David... I've missed you," she admitted softly.
He planted a tiny kiss to her temple and caressed her face. "I've missed you too."
